Bird’s-Nest Orchid (Neottia)

Overview

The genus of the Bird’s-Nest Orchids is in Southeast Asia with several species native. In Europe is only Neottia nidus-avis native, an interesting appearance. The species is without any chlorophyll. Therefore, this is a mycoheterotrophic plant. The plant gives all in all a rubber-like impression. The plant is very leathery, the leaves are degenerated to scale leaves, the flowers are brown like the rest of the plant. The Bird’s-Nest Orchid blooms from May to June and populates especially beech forests.
